“André Deshields is phenomenal … simply have to be seen”
- The New York Times (4/7/2005)

“Caligula pounces like a tiger on the stage. Savage and beautiful, the play tears through conventions -- of the theater, of morality, of history -- to unleash a vicious new view of the world. … at its center is Caligula, a remarkable turn by [André] De Shields who commands the stage … The provocative power of "Caligula" must be experienced soon.”
- Variety (4/6/2005)

“In this play that is part episodic biography, part cabaret, De Shields passionately rivets our focus with skills that he has honed over 35+ years as a theatre star.”
- NYTheatre.com (4/6/2005)

The Classical Theatre of Harlem will follow up their critically acclaimed productions of "Ain't Supposed To Die A Natural Death" and "The Cherry Orchard" with Tony Award nominee André DeShields as "CALIGULA" March 30th - April 24th.

Written by CTH co-founder Alfred Preisser and "Donkey Show" creator Randy Weiner, "CALIGULA" is a new play with music that takes place on the last night of the famed dictator's life, in his palace where he is stage managing, directing, and starring in one of his famous "entertainments" which test the limits of human intellect and appetite.

The title role in CALIGULA will be played by Broadway veteran André De Shields, who appeared in the Classical Theatre of Harlem's production of "Dream On Monkey Mountain". Mr. De Shields' long career includes the Outer Critics Circle Award for his performance in "The Full Monty"; that role also gained him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. Broadway credits include "The Wiz", "Ain't Misbehavin'" (Emmy Award), "Harlem Nocturne", and "Play On!" (Tony and Drama Desk nominations).
